I don’t know about you but when I go for a massage I expect the massage therapist to use their hands, fingers and maybe even their elbows to loosen my stress-laden muscles. There is nothing more delightful than an experienced pair of hands that helps to expunge all of the bad stuff from my body that causes me to become tense, anxious and, perhaps, a bit unpleasant to be around sometimes.

I still vividly remember a visit with a physical therapist for a problem that I was having with a disk in my neck. The disk was pinching a nerve which was causing pain in my neck, back and arm. A particularly annoying area was near my shoulder above my shoulder blade. As I sat in a massage chair, the therapist used her elbow to dig right into the affected area with a force that caused some serious discomfort. But when I left that morning, the pain was almost gone. Now that was massage!

Recently, I was introduced to the concept of Reiki. I was reading up on the various forms of massage therapy and, quite frequently, Reiki was listed as a therapeutic option or as part of the curriculum at a massage school. Further reading about Reiki has caused me to question references to Reiki in the same context as massage. In fact, I began to wonder why Reiki was included in references to massage at all. And I’m not the only one.

Massage is generally defined as “the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes, healing or relaxation.” I would think that “manipulation” is the operative word here. The practice of Reiki takes a quite different approach. Like Shiatsu massage, Reiki seeks to balance “ki” or “life force energy” within the body. The theory, according to ancient Oriental philosophy, is that if this energy is out of balance in the body, or is depleted, then an individual becomes susceptible to physical and emotional ailments. Practitioners of Reiki seek to channel energy into their clients in a manner that corrects imbalances and promotes healing.

However, based on the prescribed methods of practicing Reiki, there is no “manipulation” involved. In fact, in some cases, there is not even actual touch involved in Reiki treatments. That would certainly present a conflict between the generally accepted definition of massage and the practice of Reiki.

Reiki, as practiced today, was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui, a minister and head of a Christian school in Japan. His students had asked him how Jesus healed. Usui did not have the answer but became fixated on discovering how Jesus had cured the ill and infirmed. ( I guess “because he was the Son of God” does not qualify as an acceptable answer.)

Dr. Usui spent years studying in Christian schools, Buddhist monasteries and temples. He found no answer to the healing question until he embarked on a 21 day fast. At the end of the fast he apparently had a revelatory experience that showed him the methods he had sought to understand. He then set about on a healing ministry. Eventually, he shared his knowledge with Dr. Chujiro Hyashi who, in turn shared the knowledge with Mrs. Hawayo Takata who trained 22 Reiki Masters who then shared the knowledge with thousands of others.

Essentially, Reiki transfers energy from the Reiki practitioner to the patient. Actually, Reiki teaches that the patient draws this energy from the practitioner thus giving the patient an active role and ultimate responsibility for their own healing. The energy is then realigned and balanced and harmony is restored in the body.

Though it is not a religion there is a great deal of spirituality at work in Reiki. God or a Universal Life Force is acknowledged and recognized as the source of all life energy. Though there are specific principles involved in Reiki, the actual methods are quite similar to the “laying on of hands” practiced by faith healers of many religious denominations. But “laying on of hands” is not quite the same as “the manipulation of soft tissue” required to be defined as massage.

There are a couple of issues here. First, massage as a stand alone practice, has struggled to be recognized by the medical establishment as a legitimate form of therapy and healing. Under the auspices of physical therapy, massage is readily accepted and practiced to restore muscular function and to assist in the rehabilitative process. However, there is the view by many that massage therapy is somewhat of a “mongrel” healing application with touches of mainstream medicine, alternative medicine, holistic, health, New Age cultism, sexual indulgence and mystical fakery. The simple fact is the “the manipulation of soft tissue” has been proven and is accepted as a healing modality. It is the desire to include any healing avocation that involves touch, or even the close proximity of hand to body, under the heading of massage that creates confusion and causes suspicion.

Scientists and doctors have dismissed Reiki as a placebo that encourages patients to feel better because they are supposed to feel better. Other questions about the motivation of practitioners is the fact that Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, determined that there must be an “energy exchange” between Reiki healer and Reiki patient to invest the patient in the healing process. This investment is monetary in most cases and is a core principle of Reiki.

Another problem with Reiki being considered a form of massage is that some states require that practitioners of Reiki be licensed as massage therapists. Many Reiki practitioners dispute this categorization specifically because of the distinction between Reiki and massage as stated in the definitions presented earlier in this article.

So, Reiki has a bit of a schizophrenic personality. On the one hand, courses teaching Reiki are offered in many massage schools. On the other hand, many practitioners themselves don’t consider themselves massage therapists. So, far be it from me to try and settle this dispute in one article. Reiki may or may not be a truly effective form of healing. All I know is that I still have difficulty categorizing Reiki as massage. I think there may be some “manipulation” of the definition of massage required to justify the inclusion of Reiki.

Bruce Lee is a martial arts icon. He blazed the movie screens with his powerful, lighting quick punches and kicks. More than just a martial arts master, he was a philosopher, instructor, and actor. More than He is admired and respected by many martial artists today. He is often referred as “the Father of Mixed Martial Arts” because of his introduction of Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist). Bruce Lee was so influential that he was included in Time Magazine’s Most Important People of the Century. It put him in the ranks of Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein, Pope John II, Che Guevarra, and Adolf Hitler. He was famous for his One-Inch Punch-a strike that generates enough power to throw a man several feet away from a technique executed just an inch away from the target — without the usual leverage of a normal punch that is retracted backwards.

Bruce Lee’s training regimen is also the stuff of legend. He always emphasized exercises for the arms and the abdominal muscles. Abs training, according to Lee, is a must for any martial artist who wants to be prepared to engage in full-contact sparring, or in a real street fight.

Bruce Lee usually did three sets of bicep curls using weights as heavy as 70 to 80 pounds. He also engaged in a series or training cycle of squats, push-ups, and wrist curls and stretching. After a distance run of two to six miles, would still hop on a stationary bike and work at it for another 45 minutes — which is equivalent to a distance of 10 miles. To improve his kicking power, he used a 300-pound bag that can absorb his powerful long-range strikes.

But even with all his physical prowess and fighting skills, there was still a chink in Bruce Lee’s armor. He over-trained. It was common-knowledge that Bruce Lee was a die-hard fitness fanatic, almost maniacal when it comes to improving his physique. But despite years of experience in scientific methods of physical training, he sustained an almost life-threatening injury to his back — not during a fight or a martial arts competition — but because of over training and a mistake in a workout routine.

Reports say that sometime in 1970, while Lee was performing a barbell exercise called “Good Morning,” he mistakenly bent his body forward while lifting a very heavy barbell. The metal pole that held the two barbells were held on his shoulders, with the middle of the pole placed behind his neck.

At that time, he only weighed 135 pounds. And although he had exceptional physical strength, the gravity that pulled down the barbell was just too much for his bent body to take.

He was about to complete his first set of eight bends with the barbell when he suddenly heard a loud popping sound. He dropped the weights and immediately knew he injured himself.

At the hospital, the doctors told Bruce Lee that he had acquired a very serious back injury. The trauma to his lumbar area was so severe that he spent months in therapy. The man considered to be one of strongest human beings alive during that time was suddenly crippled from the neck down. Doctors even told him that he would never be able to continue martial arts because of his injury. As part of the treatment, he had to regularly take anti-inflammatory drugs. He was told that the first step in the back pain relief process was to reduce the swelling of the discs on his lower back.

On July 20, 1973, Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong at the age of 32. Medical reports said that the cause of death was a brain edema, or an abnormal excess fluid in his brain. Additional reports reveal that his sudden death was caused by an unusual and fatal reaction to a prescription painkiller he was taking for back pain relief. Even with the medical certificate and testimonies of people who were with Bruce Lee prior to his death, some still believe that the martial arts superstar was murdered. Others believed that he was cursed.

But one thing is clear. Bruce Lee over-trained and his mistake in training took a heavy toll on his health.

Today, like Lee, many athletes are over-training and putting their sports careers — and yes, their very lives at stake. According to health specialists, over-training takes place when an individual spends too much time working their bodies without leaving enough time for rest which is so essential to restore the body cells that are broken down during exercise. Some athletes also neglect proper nutrition and the use of proper workout techniques and procedures. The human body needs to have the right food and adequate rest in order to recuperate after training. Other factors that may lead to over-training include the excessive emphasis on competition and errors in training programs. People who over-train experience depression, loss of appetite, weight loss, muscle soreness, and insomnia — exact opposites of the results that they wanted to achieve via training. In fact, sports doctors can attest to the fact that many athletes continue to seek back pain relief.

Over-training may lead to injuries, and, in the long run, may even lead to the development of arthritis due to wear and tear of the muscles, joints, and other body parts. While a number of anti-inflammatory drugs are available in the market, these should be taken only with a doctor’s prescription.

Like Bruce Lee, people should really care about their health. However, it is important to determine the difference between having a healthy lifestyle and being obsessed with physical perfection. Over-training and an unbalanced view of sports and exercise may lead people to make tragic mistakes. While he clearly was an excellent specimen of physical excellence, Bruce Lee was not immune to errors in judgment. He too was mortal and, like the rest of us, had to seek back pain relief and other therapy to recover his health.

In physical training, as it is in life, there is such a thing as having too much of a good thing.

It is just part of growing up!” This is what an adult might say to a child if a child complains about being teased at school. Teasing is not usually harmful when done in a friendly and mutual way, and when both kids find it funny. However, when teasing becomes hurtful, unkind, and constant — it already crosses the line into bullying.

Bullying is a deliberate act. It is a desire to hurt or threaten or frighten someone. These usually verbal harassments can come in the form of words or actions. It can be done by one person or more, and can vary in the degree of severity. It can be an “on-and-off” thing, but it usually involves repeated actions by a child or a group of children. It can range from hitting, shoving, name-calling, threats, and mocking to extorting money and treasured possessions. Some kids bully by shunning others and spreading rumors about them. Others use email, chat rooms, instant messages, social networking websites, and text messages to taunt others or hurt their feelings. It can be one or a number of these, however, verbal abuse is the most common form of bullying.

Being a victim of bullying can cause emotional and psychological damage. The effects of ongoing bullying can be long-term, with the harm to the health and well-being of the bullied person lasting into adult life. It damages self-esteem, increases anxiety and can cause serious depression. Bullies are more likely to continue with the aggressive behavior and engage in delinquency and violence.

Research shows that bullying can have long-lasting effects, but particularly when it begins in adolescence. People subjected to either verbal or physical bullying are known to be at greater risk for developing depression, anxiety disorders or to behave violently. But not everyone reacts in this way. Children bullied for the first time before they hit puberty seem to get over it, but those who are victimized for the first time late on in puberty seem to become more aggressive or are more likely to turn to drink as a means of coping. People who were bullied revealed slightly higher levels of stress, but while those bullied earlier in life seemed to respond normally to provocation, people bullied for the first time late in puberty are more withdrawn and sensitive to violence.

Bullying is a significant problem in schools and is associated with a range of problems, including poor mental health and violent behavior. Other studies have shown that bullies are more likely to engage in antisocial behavior later in life, particularly assaults and rapes. A research also shows that victims of bullying experience headaches, stomach aches and colds more often than students not involved in bullying.

Research into the source of bullying from the perspective of the bully has also begun to focus on vulnerability. Many researchers have suggested that bullies are often themselves victims of bullying and that they may be repeating a pattern of the learned abuse. Equally, it has been suggested that they may be projecting dislike or anger with themselves onto others.

If a child approaches an adult and talks about being bullied, focus on offering comfort and support. Children are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying. They feel embarrassed and ashamed that it’s happening. They worry that their parents will be disappointed. The best solution in all cases is strong social support, whether from friends, family or school. Those with no one to share their problems with usually suffered the most.

True, that bullying is part of growing up, but bullying can be as upsetting for a child and a family, however, there are a lot of people and resources that are available to help.

By Freddy Roy

There have been a lot of researches that show that older drivers have the second highest risk for motor vehicle collisions of any age group, after adolescents. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, older adults are nine times more likely to be involved in fatal car accidents than drivers aged 25 to 69. In 2000, older adults made up 9% of the resident population, but accounted for 13% of all traffic fatalities and 17% of all pedestrian fatalities. Accidents involving older drivers can cause injury to both the older driver and other drivers and pedestrians.

Generally. most senior drivers are good, safe drivers. They know their limitations and do their best to follow the rules of the road. But even the best and the safest drivers can have accidents when there are factors that impair their judgment or senses. Impaired vision, poor hearing and flexibility, limited range of motion, reduced reaction time, and medications are some of the factors which can lead to fatal car accidents.

Many elderly drivers take several medications to treat certain medical conditions, including those that are specifically for psychiatric care. Those medications may interact with each other causing drowsiness or confusion. There are a lot of older people, especially those who live alone, who use psychoactive medications with or without the doctor’s prescription. Psychoactive medications may place older drivers at increased risk for potentially fatal vehicular accidents.

Psychoactive medications are drugs that, when prescribed and used prudently, can reduce or eliminate the suffering caused by psychological conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, depression, psychosis, and bipolar affective disorder.

A research was conducted on a population-based matched case-control study of older drivers who were involved in injurious crashes from 1987 to 1988. The 234 cases and 447 controls were members of a large Seattle-based health maintenance organization. Use of antidepressants medications and opioid analgesics by older drivers was associated with increased risk for injurious motor vehicle collisions. Compared with non-users, current users of cyclic antidepressants had a 2.3% higher chances of encountering an accident, or what is termed as adjusted relative risk (RR). Opioid analgesic use was also associated with an elevated crash risk. No evidence was found of a dose-related effect with either class of the drug. Current use of benzodiazepines or sedating antihistamines had little association with increased risk for injurious collisions.

Moreover, benzodiazepines are among the psychoactive medications that are widely prescribed for people over the age of 65 years. Their use has been associated with a number of adverse outcomes including cognitive impairment, an increased risk of falls and hip fractures, especially in people with coexisting medical illness, and car accidents.

The risks are greater with long-acting agents and during the first few weeks after drug initiation. In spite of the risks, there is evidence that benzodiazepines may be overprescribed to elderly people. Among the problems identified are the overprescription of long-acting benzodiazepines, high rates of benzodiazepine use in combination with other psychoactive drugs and the prescribing of benzodiazepines for long-term use.

While the automobile is a powerful tool for independence and mobility, it is also potentially dangerous. As we grow old, our ability to drive safely may be limited by many factors. It’s important to recognize these risk factors and minimize them if possible before car accident occurs. More importantly, all drivers should be aware of safe driving habits, regardless of age.

It does not, by any means, build the muscle for you.

Most “muscle building food” is high in protein. Protein is essential to bodybuilding, because it aids in muscle growth, and it quickly repairs any damage done to muscles during workouts. Protein also has the ability to enhance your body’s natural pain relieving hormones, which enables you to workout day after day, with minimal pain. The benefits of protein go on and on, but all you really need to know is that it is essential to your bodybuilding program.

Foods that are considered “muscle building foods” include eggs, beans, meats, poultry, fish, and dairy foods. Your diet should contain all of these foods, but you must use caution. Some of these foods, such as an abundance of meat and dairy, can also quickly put on body fat, which is not what you want. You must determine how many calories you need to consume daily, based on your own personal needs, and make sure that you are not consuming more than that in food.

Because of this, “muscle building food” isn’t the only thing that you need. You also need protein supplements. If you are a bodybuilder, you cannot get the amount of protein that you need simply from the “muscle building food” that you eat. A good whey protein supplement is recommended, and you will hear a great deal of discussion and debate concerning protein supplements in your local gym.

There is a great deal more to “muscle building food” than just eating the food. The time of day that you eat the food matters as well. You will hear many theories and recommendations concerning this. The first step is to make sure that you and your muscles have enough energy for your workouts, which means that “muscle building food” needs to be consumed before workouts, including protein supplements. It is suggested that you consume pre-workout food and supplements about one and a half hours before your workout, so that the food has time to digest.

“Muscle building food” must also be consumed after a workout, preferably within twenty minutes, to prevent your body from going into a catabolic state. A carbohydrate is recommended, as well as more protein supplements. If you fail to eat within twenty minutes of a workout, and your body goes into a catabolic state, your body is essentially breaking down other muscles to replace what the muscles you have worked lost during the workout, which kind of defeats your purposes.

One thing is certain, if you are serious about bodybuilding, you must be serious about your diet, including “muscle building food,” and you must be serious about protein supplements as well. Other issues that should be important to bodybuilders include the intake of vitamins and minerals, water, and of course, adequate sleep.

People with high blood cholesterol levels are very exposed to developing heart disease. High cholesterol levels are common to people with ages over 50, people with weight problems, people with gastro-intestinal disorders and people with diabetes. High blood cholesterol levels can be the result of either overproduction of the substance (due to liver dysfunctions) or the inability of the body to eliminate it. However, apart from physiological factors that enable the accumulation of cholesterol inside the organism, there are also many other external factors that contribute to cholesterol build up: inappropriate diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking and alcohol abuse.

Although the body is able to produce the amount of cholesterol it needs for sustaining its normal activity, a high-cholesterol diet can significantly increase blood cholesterol levels. Foods of animal origin are rich in cholesterol and saturated fats that are very harmful to the organism when they are consumed in large amounts. You should replace meats and dairy products with vegetables, cereals and fruits in order to maintain normal cholesterol levels. Simple carbohydrates (sweets) also enable cholesterol to build up inside the body and therefore should be avoided.

Proper physical exercise is very important for keeping your blood cholesterol levels in check. Regular physical exercise improves blood circulation and helps in the elimination of excess cholesterol. Exercise frequently and you will be able to maintain normal cholesterol levels and lose extra weight.

Smoking is considered to be a major factor of risk in heart disease. Smoking facilitates cholesterol to deposit inside arteries, where they can cause blockage, perturbing the normal blood flow. If you have high blood cholesterol levels and you are a smoker, it is advised to stop smoking. Alcohol also contributes to the accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream and therefore it should be avoided.

Within normal limits, cholesterol is very important to the organism. The liver produces cholesterol (a waxy, viscous substance) in small amounts, as it is required in certain physiological processes. Without cholesterol, the body is unable to produce hormones (testosterone and estrogen), vitamin D (fortifies bone tissues) and bile (a very important substance used in digesting fat). While in small quantities cholesterol is benefic for the organism, in excess it can cause a lot of harm. Cholesterol is not soluble in blood and therefore it accumulates and deposits inside arteries, slowing down the normal blood circulation. High cholesterol levels considerably increase the risk of cardio-vascular diseases and even heart failure.

It is very important to know that there are several types of cholesterol. When you have your cholesterol levels checked, you are usually told the total cholesterol level. Total cholesterol level consists of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Low-density lipoprotein is also known as “bad cholesterol” and this substance can be harmful to the human body when it accumulates in excess. Bad cholesterol (LDL) accumulates inside arteries and perturbs normal blood circulation. Good cholesterol (HDL) is benign to the organism, as it collects low-density lipoprotein from the bloodstream and brings it back to the liver.

By keeping a healthy diet and by exercising regularly, you will be able to raise your good cholesterol levels, while reducing bad cholesterol levels. By making improvements in your lifestyle, you will be able to maintain your total cholesterol levels in check.

In the bodybuilding world, you may hear about “muscle building food.” What exactly is “muscle building food?” Is this food that actually builds muscles for you? “Muscle Building Food” is essentially food that aids in building muscles.

Getting an injury is probably an athlete’s worst nightmare. For professional athletes, it could mean the end of a rewarding career or losing a long-cherished dream. But it is not athletes alone who are prone to major accidents or physical damage. Even office workers, housewives, and pedestrians who go about their usual routines could be exposed to very serious injury.

How does an injury actually hurt or immobilize a person? When a certain body part is injured, the tissues in that body part are stretched out of ranger or a strong impact causes the blood vessels to be torn or damaged. The amount of bleeding may be increased if the injury involves the tearing or piercing of an artery where blood flows through. When an arterial occurs, blood is prevented from reaching other body parts, leaving the cells with no nourishment that is supposed to come from the blood. These dying cells stimulate the release of histamine and cause the blood vessels to swell and bring increased blood supply and nutrients to aid in the repair of the damaged tissues. The capillaries become more absorbent and more protein and inflammatory substances might be pushed into the injured area and cause swelling.

How do we treat minor injuries? The best thing to remember in treating minor injuries is the acronym R-I-C-E:

Rest - the injured part as much as possible to allow the healing of damaged tissues.

Ice - Apply ice for up to 10 minutes. Do not wait for the swelling to start. This may be repeated every 2 hours during the first two days after injury. It is important not to keep the ice on any longer than 10 minutes as the body then reacts by increasing blood flow to warm the area and therefore exacerbating the swelling. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Use a wet flannel.

Compression - After ice, apply a compression bandage to help minimize the swelling to the tissues.

Elevation - Elevate the injured part to help limit blood flow and prevent use of muscles to the injured part.

Physical therapy combined with the use of pain relievers like Tramadol may hasten the recovery period. Tramadol is a synthetic pain reliever that has gained the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It works by binding the receptors of the brain which are responsible for transmitting painful sensations throughout the body. Several medical studies show that this medication has a low abuse rate compared to other pain relievers. In addition, Tramadol side effects are milder compared to other pain relieving drugs out in the market. These side effects may include nausea, constipation, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and vomiting. Individuals should consult their doctors before taking this medicine. Though Tramadol side effects are mild and bearable, it may not be used by individuals with certain health conditions and medical history. This drug may also interact with other drugs which may lead to the development of more unwanted side effects.

Prevention is better than cure. Rather than seeking medical attention to treat injuries, this condition can be prevented by proper execution of exercise movements or sports activities. A doctor-approved fitness program which includes flexibility training, warm-up, and cool down exercises may lessen the development of injuries. If these things fail, ask your doctor about Tramadol.

Antidepressant Drugs and the Size of your Baby

By Dustin Hines

In direct opposition of the old saying, size may actually matter. At least, they appear to matter when it comes to determining which children are more likely to need antidepressant drugs in their later years. Some recent studies have found evidence pointing to the possibility that babies that are smaller than average are more likely to develop a number of behavioral disorders, with depression being the most notable among them. Statistical data was gathered to serve as background verification, which had data that supported the theory. However, this is still not entirely accepted, and additional research into the matter needs to be conducted.

The research speculated that certain conditions in the mother’s womb that lead to smaller babies at birth may also be responsible for mood disorders, such as depression. The study involved an estimated 4,600 babies who were born in 1946. Researchers noted down details such as weight, the condition at birth, and the life signs. Forty years later, those babies were checked up and the results showed that those children who were born smaller than average had developed a mood disorder and used antidepressant drugs at least once in the past. According to the statistical data gathered, there appeared to be a relationship between birth size and mental health. In theory, a baby’s size at birth is inversely proportional to the state of that child’s future mental health, such that bigger children are less likely to be effective in dealing with anxiety or depression.

One problem with this conclusion, however, is the fact that the research team did not really do any research on the other probable causes. There was no effort to eliminate other possibilities over the course of the data analysis, at least, according to opponents of the theory. Some critics have also pointed out that the study is incomplete, in the sense that not all of the potentially relevant information was noted by the research team. Among these are medical history (both mental and physical), possible hereditary traits, and other factors. This casts a sizable amount of doubt on just how accurate the theory is, even if it does have enough information to prompt further research into the matter. It should be noted that some of those studies are dedicated solely to eliminating some of the variables that affected the final results.

There were also other things that proved notable, even if not all the pertinent data was taken. For example, there was the fact that all of those who had developed mental illness problems and used antidepressant drugs in their adult lives also developed slower than other children. In particular, milestones such as their first word and the ability to walk on two legs were notably performed a significant amount of time later than average children. It was noted that these same individuals also were of smaller than average birth height and weight, lending some credibility to the theory.

Still, as stated above, the idea has not yet been proven conclusively. There is still a large number of variables that have not been taken account for and possible causes that were not eliminated, or even noted. These are glaring weaknesses in the argument to support the results of the study, especially since the details ignored by the research team could easily have had a significant impact on their findings.

In order to provide the highest standards in infection control, a perfectly maintained autoclave or sterilizer is of utmost improtance.

While most surgical instruments nowadays are manufactured from stainless steel, care and attention is still required to enable the instruments to provide better services and to ensure that they remain in the best condition even after a prolonged period of use.

Here are some simple but important operational steps to be followed to ensure your steam autoclave works to the desired purpose and to ensure they would be well maintained.

Instruments to be autoclaved are to be done so in distilled water, tap water or soft ware as hard water have the tendency to leave behind deposits on the instruments, and affect the joints of the instruments, often making them stiff.

After the instruments are used, clean and decontaminate all instruments in cold or lukewarm water. The primary purpose of doing so is to ensure that the instruments do not become stained and so that the joints do not become stiff.

Generally, put the instruments that are to be sterilized into the dressing drum of the autoclave, making sure that the holes of the dressing drum are opened to allow the steam to enter the dressing drum and reach the instruments to be sterilized, and place the drum into the autoclave.

After placing the lid on the container, tighten the lid by opposite locking nuts.

As soon as the pressure gauge shows a pressure of 2lbs, allow the enclosed air to escape by opening the air exhaust valve.

As the pressure reaches to about 15 lbs or the equivalent of 1.05 kgf per square cm, the main safety valve will automatically come into operation and start blowing off excess steam maintaining pressure of 15 lbs inside the autoclave.

To open the container, apply some firm force by holding the lid handle and turn it towards the right, till both the arrow marks on the lid and container co-incide. Then lift and remove the lid using the lifting handle.

When unloading an autoclave, it is a good idea to open the door and wait 10 minutes in order to assure proper evaporation and drying before removing the cart.

The most frequent reason for sterilization failure is lack of contact between the steam and the germs that you are trying to kill.

Air usually moves to the bottom of the autoclave because it is heavier than steam and is then forced out through the drain.

It is essential that packs are placed on their sides to make sure that the air is not trapped and cannot escape.

It is also easier for the air to be forced downwards between the packs than to go through the many layers of packs that have been placed flat.

By operating the autoclave using an operational checklist, and by maintaining an operational log, it is possible to reduce human errors of operation and to troubleshoot difficulties that arise during operation.

Where it is a health service such as a hospital that requires sterilization service, a Central Supplies And Stores Department or CSSD manned by qualified and experienced CSSD technicians and nurses will be necessary to enable the highest standard of health care and to ensure the surgical instruments and supplies are well sterilized, enabling the autoclaves to have the optimum lifespan of service as they are well taken care of and maintained.

Having a big waist and belly is not just a cosmetic issue but also a health threat. Medical studies show that having waistlines above 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men may increase the risk of developing several health ailments. These ailments may include heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. A bulkier waistline may double or quadruple the possibility of developing these risks, compared to those with slimmer waistlines.

A study published by the American Journal of Epidemiology further reinforced these findings. Their research showed that men with with the largest waistlines were found to be 42 percent more likely to develop heart disease while 44 percent of women may develop this disease. Because of this discovery, many individuals are in a hurry to lose unwanted weight. However, these individuals tend to overdo things or take unnecessary measures just to lose weight. People who want to trim down tend to exercise too much, starve themselves, and take unnecessary medication. Partaking in such activities may do more harm than good.

Starving is one of the things that many individuals do to lose weight believing they will lose significant weight in no time . This belief in inaccurate, and instead achieving weight-loss, individuals who starve themselves may gain more weight. This happens because the body’s metabolic rate drops when people starve themselves, thus promoting more caloric intake that leads to fat production. Metabolism is the chemical reactions that takes place in the human body’s cells that converts the consumed food into energy. Starving may lead to weight-gain because when the body is not receiving the nutrients it needs, the body stores as much fat as possible.

People who want to lose weight spend enormous amounts of time and effort on the gym. Often doing a lot of cardiovascular exercises and other kinds of workouts, thinking that it will speed up there weight-loss program. Over-training is not an effective way to lose weight because it may cause injuries due to too much volume of intensity or too much intensity. Because of these factors, the body is unable to cope with the stress of the training load that may lead to over-use type injuries. These injuries may include Achilles tendinitis, shin splints, and anterior knee pain. To avoid these injuries medical experts advise individuals to give importance to rest and recovery because periods of heavy training need to be followed by rest to allow the body to develop and lessen the development of injury.

There are a growing number of individuals that are turning to weight loss pills for weight loss. It is because they believe that this saves them from all the rigorous activities just to lose weight. Although there are many weight loss pills that can help in weight loss, there are many medications designed for weight loss that would do more harm than good. However, once the dosage is stopped, there is a possibility to gain back the lost weight. The use of these pills may also bring side effects like diarrhea, elevated blood pressure, nervousness, tremor, heart palpitations, or even heart failure.

People who want to lose weight should bear in mind that there are no short cuts to weight-loss. Nutritionists and doctors agree that individuals who want to lose weight must ask for doctor’s supervision and combine it exercise and a healthy diet.

The whole group of carbohydrates and saccarides was largely neglected. With the advent of Glycobiology scientists have since come to learn an increasing amount about these vital nutrients.

Dr McAnalley did some of the first research with Glyconutrients in 1995. He developed and filed patents for Glyconutrient formulas in 1996. Scientists began to realize the importance of polysaccharides and Glyconutrients in the body and how taking supplements with these nutrients can be very beneficial to your health.

He and his research staff started their work when they isolated and researched acemannan from the Aloe Vera, plant. Aloe polymannose (acemannan) is a polysaccharide that is nontoxic. Many of the health benefits from this ancient healing plant can be credited to this natural polysaccharide. Since that time Dr McAnalley has invented over 66 patented products. He is a renowned speaker and held many prominent positions.

Because of his pioneer work on Polysaccerides and Glyconutrients a whole new research is being conducted into these nutrients. This is called Glycobiology (the study of Glyconutrients) Scientists are discovering more and more about the uses of these substances and their important functions in the body.

Having neglected the study of carbohydrates for so long scientists are just now taking steps to understand the complex make up of this class of foods. As they dig deeper they are uncovering the mysteries of the body functions and how the cells actually communicate with each other. They are also discovering the body’s natural healing mechanisms and how this can be improved with these vital nutrients.

Scientists are also studying the pharmacokinetics of these substances. This is the study of how these Glyconutrients, polysaccharides, disaccharides and monosaccharide absorb, excrete, effect metabolism and react with the body.

With this Glycobiology research scientists can uncover all the different uses these nutrient have and unlock the different chemical compounds found within the complex carbohydrate family of foods. As they unlock the compounds and chains of saccarides they will get more insight into these substances and see how they can improve our health.

Dr McAnalley’s long years of work have paved the way for other scientists and research students to continue in their quest for more information about the carbohydrate family of foods (polysaccharides, and Glyconutrients). As they continue to learn more we shall see more information on how we can improve our health with these vital nutrients.

Many nutritional supplements are being developed for these Glyconutrients. One of the most well known is Ambrotose. This supplement was developed by Mannetech and provides all the components required for your body to manufacture Glyconutrients. This is useful to you, as the foods we eat today do not have enough of this vital nutrient for our bodies to maintain a good state of health. When you take these supplements you can help your body heal and maintain its health and improve your lifestyle by being the healthy person you should be.

Faecal incontinence may be embarrassing for most of them. People suffering from faecal incontinence will avoid going to work and avoid other social and physical activity. But, do you know that this is treatable. Do not avoid consulting your doctor thinking nothing can be done about it. There are bowel retraining and other exercises that you can follow easily at the comforts of your home.

Bowel retraining and exercise:

Stop faecal incontinence or loss of control over your stools. Retrain your anal, buttock and pelvic muscles and have greater control over the passage of stools. Raise above an embarrassing situation! You may not be aware of the urge to defecate or expel your stools. Hence, you need some training to be aware of your muscles and bowel movement. Training is required to the older adults as they lack the awareness of the urge to defecate. They should be guided to the toilet after every meal. This will make them aware of the usage of toilet and their urge too.

For other adults, they can try pelvic or kegel exercise. Hold on to your breath and hold your anal muscles tightly till you count down 5 slowly. Think that you are trying to control the passage of stool. Follow this for 30 minutes and practise this thrice daily.

Diet is also vital!

Diet plays an important role in treating faecal incontinence. Eat food rich in fibre and probiotics. Fibre is found in plenty in fruits and vegetables. Green leafy vegetables and spinach will add bulk to the loose stools. Similarly, fruits will also be helpful; Probiotics or the friendly bacteria is found in curds, soya milk, unpasteurised milk and sprouted grams too.

Reasons for bowel incontinence are:

Damage to anal muscles during pregnancy

Improper diet

injury to the anal sphincter muscles or the nerves surrounding these muscles

Spinal cord damage

Radiation treatment to the lower pelvic region

Stroke

Chemotherapy

Certain medications, such as antibiotics or Neurontin

Both men and women suffer from this problem, though it is more common in women because of injury to the anal muscles or nerves that can occur during childbirth. Bowel incontinence becomes more common with advancing age as the muscles that control bowel movements (anal sphincter muscles) weaken. Follow the above exercise and diet, you will soon be relieved from it. Now, you can gain control over your problems naturally!
